History:
Truth be told, not much is known about Mari's background except for the details thrown here and there. She was the youngest of three sisters, and had always been talented in show business especially singing. Of course, being immensely talented in one area ever since she was young would bring both good and bad influence that shaped Mari to be how she was now, most notably: her pure love and enjoyment to be the main spotlight.
Possibly, this led to her being discovered by a talent office and finally met the two girls called Moe Morita and Mizuki Misawa to make an idol trio known as Mineral★Miracle★Muse. Eventually, Mari was appointed as the leader of the group, as well as the main singer, song writer, choreographer, decision maker, mood maker.... everything. They did have a manager, but in the face of Mari's strong personality, even her teammates chose to follow her decisions (most of the time).
Except, this simple idol life was not all about Mari Maya, the queen of the main stage.
Like every child and teenager across the country, even idols had their own interest too! Mari, although always buried under the huge workload of an idol, still had time for her own personal interest. No, it was not related to singing at all. The one area that was lucky enough to be the target of her interest is: tokusatsu, superheroes and magical girls.
Her love and passion for the genre is so immense that Mari had always dreamed of being a superhero herself. And, Mari being Mari, of course she would see to ensure her dream came true. She designed her own outfits, weapons, catchphrases, and even going as far as having physical training to prepare herself to be the great superheroine she aspired to be. Sadly, another vigilante called Samurai Flamenco appeared and stole her spotlight before Mari (also later known as Flamenco Diamond) could be the first one, and nothing ever enraged her more.
She confronted Samurai Flamenco later on, whom she could easily tell was a fellow celebrity named Hazama Masayoshi, after she saved his life and identity from some low class thugs. Deciding that he owed his life to her, Mari decided he should be her sidekick and of course, what could go wrong with that? Sometime later after she had made her debut as Flamenco Diamond, money was put on her head and she (and Samurai Flamenco) were chased by bounty hunters - yet, as if that would stop her! Still, the incident made Hazama realized he should not be pushed around by a girl whose idea of justice was more violent and straightforward than he had, and they mutually decided to end their alliance, although still keeping in touch and helping each other.
Her solo career did not go for very long, surprisingly, because later on, Mari dragged Moe and Mizuki into this shenanigan and together they were called The Flamenco Girls.
Just as they started getting bored fighting pickpockets and perverts and thugs, as if their wish was granted by the unknown power above, their normal city was suddenly attacked by real monsters a la your classic tokusatsu drama (certainly not joking here, 100% fact....). Mari took delight in this, but not when King Torture, the villain mastermind, kept on challenging Samurai Flamenco again and again to protect their city. Their city! It caused Mari to grow restless and feel inferior, something new that frustrates her, and she decided to stop lending a hand to Samurai Flamenco fighting the "minions", and went to take on the final boss - capturing the big fish by herself.
It didn't go as well as she had hoped for. While Mizuki refused to follow because she would rather attend the rehearsal before their concert on that same day, Moe followed Mari to King Torture's lair. Just as expected, they lost to the villain and were captured. Of course, as expected of a superhero, Mari shouted to King Torture to leave Moe alone because the problem was only between the two of them, but instead, it prompted him to approach Moe instead. In the face of King Torture's threat, Moe tried to give herself up instead of Mari to be tortured despite almost losing a finger. Impressed by her sincerity, she was granted the opposite and released from captive.
Such good fate wasn't shared, however. Mari was deemed despicable by King Torture because the reason why she tried to save Moe was because that's what a superhero was expected to say/do, instead of coming genuinely from her. He told her she's a coward when facing a real danger, and she had hoped Moe had done exactly the thing she did: sacrifice herself for Mari. As if to make the reality even worse for the masked vigilante, King Torture also said out loud that that was something that Moe herself realized, which Moe did not even deny.
This came off as a shock to Mari who was never confronted by anyone for her selfishness and overbearing attitude. Despite this, after Samurai Flamenco saved all of them, Mari still went to her own concert and gave a heartfelt performance, still dressed in Flamenco Diamond attire (subsequently revealing her identity for the world to see). Afterward, still suffering from the shock, the backlash caused her to run away from the reality. Mari went to exile herself and hid away from the public and her friends.
Mari was taken from the middle of ep.9, just after she issued a challenge to King Torture via television.
Appearance: the girl in the middle with twintail, for her alter ego, flamenco diamond
Personality:
Meeting Mari Maya is an experience that can only be described as having a hurricane comes out of nowhere in the middle of the peaceful March, leaving the place a mess in one swift move and sure to leave an impression. In fact, it may be too nice to use a hurricane as a comparison, because people are often left speechless after meeting Mari – an effective mood maker in her best day, as well as a mood ruiner in her bad days.
Fearless, assertive, and lively. Mari’s energetic personality brightens the room instantly as she enters, entertaining her audience and colleagues alike with her endless jokes and cutesy acts. When she is entertained and her needs are met, she is capable of having the productivity rate three times more than what is considered average, and therefore, keeping her fans (and agency) chipper and satisfied. She claimed she had written 70 songs once when she was in one of her best days! Again, it all goes back whether Mari has her interest in the issue she is subjected to. As long as her best interest is kept entertained, then she will carry on. If it bores her? Well, even she once decided to leave vigilante business for a moment when it grew tedious and became a routine, no longer giving her the element of surprise and excitement.
No matter how swamped she is, Mari’s dignity and any of her responsibilities would never be at stake because she would ensure that all of her deadlines are met. Even after she was just saved from a severe mental and physical torture by an enemy, Mari went to her concert to give her fans a show they would never forget.
The world is her stage and she would not give it up for anything.
Calling her ambitious or even responsible would be a mistake, because Mari’s life essence comes from cheer and applause and her own desires. She is an attention seeker at best, the picture perfect example of a celebrity who is simply who she is to bask on the sheer fame and facilities she would gain. Because Mari doesn’t inspire her fans through her songs by lifting up their spirits, nor does she give cutesy motivational speeches to drooling fans that she would rather slap right and left for daring to ogle on innocent woman. Mari does what she does to get approval, to gain attention. There is no point in doing anything if she does not get the coverage she deserves, which is why she keeps on creating sensation to ensure she gets it. Debuting as Flamenco Diamond to “Save the city” was just the beginning, challenging King Torture heads on was the big winning prize because then she would be remembered as the girl who beat the final villain. Greedy would be the better word to describe Mari rather than ambitious.
Her words are always full of authoritative tone, air of confidence surround each of her decisions - enough that they're pretty much closing into the arrogant and overbearing zone. Once, she straightforwardly told Moe to stop talking when she got jealous of the other girl, and she would not stop to persuade others into doing what she wants until they give in to her wish. Such as when she wanted to see Goto in a uniform that she personally made, and basically tried to throw herself on him because she had a crush on him. She even sees herself as the main and the only relevant member of the MMM. Later on when Mizuki confronted her to come back to MMM, Mari shouted that the MMM is nothing without her anyway. She sees her own teammates as nothing but her "sidekicks", a stepping stone for herself.
Yet, Mari is an actual idol that has always been talk about and famed because of her hard work and talent, her charm and perseverance should no longer be in doubt as it is admitted even by her teammates themselves. Her teammates’ loyalty to her, even with Mizuki’s constant complaint directed at her, is never in doubt and Mari knows they would follow her to the highest mountain peak. At the same time, unfortunately, Mari is manipulative that she would use others’ weakness against themselves. Her persuasion to get Moe and Mizuki to join her adventure as a vigilante was easy because she knows of Moe’s crush on her and Mizuki’s secret crave and dorky side. To the point that she is not one above using coercion method such as blackmailing Samurai Flamenco into being her “sidekick” by threatening to expose his identity should he refuse.
Sadly, the loyalty Mizuki and Moe holds for her is not returned by Mari herself.
Mari was forced to admit her biggest weakness during a session with King Torture (aptly named indeed), when Moe genuinely asked the villain to take her instead of Mari because a world without her raison d’etre is nothing for her. Mari said the same thing also, but everyone in the room know that she wasn’t even anywhere near Moe’s level of sincerity.
She was never in this vigilante business for the same reason Samurai Flamenco is, anyway. She took it hard and fell into deep hatred directed at her “friends”, the world and herself.
Her idea of justice is very simple and straightforward, that no fairness deserved by the bad guys because they have done bad deeds anyway, with no mercy. Behind all of those ambition and bad attitude is a naive girl exposed to success so early in her age. Her childhood was probably filled with superheroes and magical girls, that she never bothered to look beyond except what is on the outside layer. Mari said it herself, "I don't get the whole good versus evil thing, but I know that bad guys deserve to die". It's simple, Mari acts as if she owns the world, and King Torture's session opened her eyes that she is nothing but a coward who isn't ready for the real danger of the world.
A hundred bad traits later, we would still be here discussing why Mari is exactly what a superhero or idol is not supposed to be. Still, she is a passionate girl who would go miles to see her wish fulfilled, no matter how bad or questionable it may be. Once, she even went on a 4-hours train ride to follow a guy she liked just because there was a chance he was going on a date with her girlfriend?! Another reminder that she handmade all of her outfits and weapons, as well as creating her own catchphrases in order to prepare herself to be a superheroine. She wouldn't easily give up even when facing difficulties, even when she failed the written part of her driving test seven times in a row!
Really, after you get to know Mari, maybe then you'll realize that this is why celebrities keep their life private - be it an idol, or masked vigilante, or anyone you'd consider a celebrity. Even if they are sparkling so bright on the stage their charm could inspire the world, but what good would they be if they're just as flawed as their fans?
Abilities:
★ Mari is, thankfully, a mere mortal. She has a talent for singing and kicking bad people's balls, as well as simple physical defense (and offense, it is most likely karate judging from the moves), but she's no professional fighter.
★ Singing! She has the natural ability to sing, which is not limited to just that. Mari is also capable of composing songs, from the lyrics to the instrument.
★ Costume-making and weapon-making, apparently. Please note that this weapon can electrocute...people... It can also change form to a thorny bludgeon kinda thing.
★ Other show business related talent!! Mari was shown to act in a drama in the manga.
Other:
Mari answered that she would love to visit Gotham city when asked about the place she wants to go the most?? Also, she has a uniform fetish and admitted that she's a do-S....
